Stone China
Stone China
Allan Forrest Small
$900.00

Artist statement: These tiny shards of old china wash up around out 200-year old house every time it rains. I arranged the bits on the kitchen table to photograph them, then realized it would make an interesting painting - abstract in composition, but scrupulously realistic in rendering. I sketched the outlines about twenty times life-size, then set each little piece on my watercolor paper as I painted its pattern and reflections. I like the playful result, which makes the viewer do a double-take.
Specific medium: transparent watercolor

$1,100.00

Artist statement: This beautiful old house has been abandoned and left to the elements. Its bittersweet beauty calls me back again and again; I have painted it in all seasons. The December snow is kind, softening edges and disguising the decay. A brief thaw, seen here, hints at renewal - before the unforgiving Spring reveals the full extent of the decay.
Specific medium: transparent watercolor

$200.00

Artist statement: I have been an artist in the style of the Chinese brush and Japanese Sumi-e painters for nearly 30 years. I appreciate the simplicity of the composition, the simplicity of line and expression.
Specific medium: Ink & watercolor on Zen paper

$250.00

Artist statement: I especially love the fine line Gong Bi painting of the Flower and Bird painters of China. This subject is very apt to celebrate the exquisite beauty of the flower. My inspiration was a series of photos by a friend of her Night Bloomer. The use of a guache white paint to contrast with the dark paper was a delight.
Specific medium: Chinese ink & Watercolor on paper

Artist statement: I am fascinated with the antics of black birds and love to paint them. We often consider them noisy garbage eaters and do not realize their value in helping us humans to control the trash we create. I am aware of the state our planet is in and celebrate these wonderful creatures that mitigate in a small way our foolishness.
Specific medium: Ink & watercolor on semi-sized paper

$425.00

Selected for Exhibition
Artist statement: With a strong focus on animal portraits and exclusively using the pastel medium, my work explores the profound expression that surfaces at the intersection of light and form and anatomy. My compositions gravitate towards moments of stillness, quietude and even contentment. Moments that are seemingly mundane and too easily missed in the stress and bustle of everyday life. Moments that offer a chance to slow the mind and calm the soul and reconnect with the world around us.
Specific medium: Soft Pastel

Artist statement: The sand castle construction is left behind as a mother tenderly holds her son to watch the waves gently lap the shore. The water and wind that will erode the castles also sets the distant sail gliding slowly out of view to unknown adventures. How long will she be able to cherish this moment, before his curiosity and childhood energy demand that he be put down to explore the little treasures that wash ashore? What lies ahead? Hold the moments dear. (Photo courtesy of Daiga Ellaby on Unsplash).
Specific medium: Watercolor on Arches 140 lb cold press.

Artist statement: While wandering through villages in Andalusia, Spain, I came upon this back alley in the town of Alcala de los Gazules. The view across the valley to the distant mountains was silent and stark with only the abandoned mop and blue bucket hinting that people had sought refuge from the sun.
Specific medium: Watercolor on Arches 140 lb cold press.
