Artist statement: In this portrait of my daughter, I tried to capture the feeling of both expectation and waiting that accompanies the transition between youth and waiting for the dance of adulthood to begin. I purposefully chose both a background and style of dress that are are both semi-formal and timeless to help represent the universal feeling of this time in a young woman's life.

Artist statement: With photography, I strive to find beauty in the everyday and especially love the detailed view of macro photography. I often find myself drawn to nature with all its fascinating details. Sunflowers are bright and beautiful with their vibrant petals, but there is just something about them in black and white. The petals appear to come to life and begin to move. As with all things living, this flower has since faded, but with this photo, I can remember the day it danced for me.

Artist statement: Faces are stories. I am driven to portray these stories through my artwork. Using watercolor on paper, I focus on detail and likeness to capture my subject and show their personality, their emotions, their story. I use layers of color to create depth and draw the viewer in. Through the process of painting my subjects I get to know them. My goal is to bring life to the paper so the viewer can know them too. Through my portraits I celebrate each of my subjects and tell their stories.

Photography - Second Prize
Selected for Exhibition Second Place - Photog.
Artist statement: Especially when they were younger, images of my children hinted at some unconscious wisdom guiding them through the commotion of growing up. In newer work, I now see beings becoming aware of their own power as they begin to navigate the world on their own. With this independence, there is often less opportunity for collaborating and making more photographs. The pandemic, however, offered an unexplored circumstance that gave rise to recent portraits like the one you see here.
